James R. (Jim) Thornton, CSP, CIH, FASSP, FAIHA, has more than 40 years’ experience in occupational safety and health. He recently retired as director, EH&S, at Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII). With 35,000 employees, HII is the nation's leading designer, builder and refueler of nuclear and non-nuclear aircraft carriers, submarines and surface vessels. Thornton is Chair of ASSP’s Government Affairs Committee. He previously served as vice president, professional affairs. He is a recipient of ASSP President’s Award and he has received ASSP’s Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award several times. He is a Fellow of ASSP and AIHA.
