It is difficult to see everything happening in an organization’s culture. Information is constantly changing, and some of it is hidden under layers of protection or inaccessible due to distance. This can put leaders in a position of reacting rather than actively leading – and, worse, can blindside them. This hidden culture can neutralize or block a company's ability to rise above performance plateaus. However, discerning and understanding leaders can learn to make needed adjustments to improve safety culture and performance outcomes.
