All the definitions in this document were approved as part of American National Standards, dating back to the 1992 edition of ANSI Z359.1 standard. As new standards are developed, and existing standards are revised, definitions in this document may be added or updated. A list of the Z359 standards is provided in section 3. The originating standard is identified following each definition, using the standard nomenclature and date of the edition in which the definition appeared. Where a term is used in more than one standard, the definition is identified by the latest standard under which it was updated/revised and approved. In this document, the definitions appear in alphabetical order and numbered in the left column of every page. Where there is explanatory text in the right-hand column, both the definition and the explanation are derived from an approved standard.
