The impact of infectious diseases to workers varies widely and often depends on factors related to exposure, susceptibility, transmission, virulence, and other characteristics of the disease-causing agent. As we’ve seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, this concern extends well beyond workplaces like labs and clinics where many employees work directly with biological agents. It requires organizations of all kinds to consider a wide range of public health considerations related to agents such as legionella, malaria, mold, bloodborne pathogens and contaminated food and water. Organizations must integrate preventive measures to mitigate these risks in their occupational safety and health management programs. We will review the principles of prevention with a particular focus on “ISO 45006, Guidelines for organizations on preventing and managing infectious diseases.”

What You Will Learn

  • Discuss ways to address context considerations when planning for infectious diseases
  • Review how to plan for infectious disease in your occupational safety and health management structure
  • Practice applying guidelines provided in ISO 45006
