Session Description

OSHA is considering reopening its lockout/tagout rule, which could impact all occupational safety and health professional (OSH) in the U.S. We will examine current consensus thinking on the control of hazardous energy and possible scenarios involving a reopened OSHA rule. The ANSI/ASSP Z244.1 Standard presents requirements for controlling hazardous energy through three different approaches: lockout (the primary approach), tagout and alternative methods. We will review the standard’s requirements with focus on the use of control systems as used in alternative methods. In addition, we will discuss situations that may require alternative methods rather than conventional lockout, and we will review criteria for evaluating alternative methods based on risk assessment and determining their effectiveness.
