Course Description

Examine the current consensus thinking regarding the control of hazardous energy. The revised Z244 standard presents requirements for controlling hazardous energy through three different approaches: lockout (the primary approach), tagout and alternative methods. Review the standard's principal content, including responsibilities, design, program, procedures, training, auditing, control elements and alternative methods. Discuss example scenarios that may require alternative methods rather than conventional lockout, as well as the criteria for evaluating alternative methods and determining their effectiveness based on risk assessment.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the evolution of the Z244.1 and A10.44 standards and their relationship to OSHA 1910.147 and 1926
  • Understand the structure and content of the Z244.1 and A10.44 standards
  • Explain the basis for auditing the effectiveness of lockout, tagout and alternative methods
  • Identify when alternative methods may be the preferred choice for energy control instead of conventional lockout or tagout
  • Describe criteria for evaluating alternative methods
  • Summarize the variations between Z244.1, A10.44 and OSHA 1910.147
  • Recognize the role of advanced control technology in the control of hazardous energy
